Developed by the Royal Commission for AlUla and managed by General Hotel Management Ltd., the 35-room property transforms the historic Hegra railway station into a refined cultural retreat. Blending preserved heritage structures with contemporary design, immersive dining, and wellness experiences, The Chedi Hegra marks a major milestone in AlUla’s sustainable tourism development.
The Royal Commission for AlUla has officially unveiled The Chedi Hegra, a boutique luxury hotel located within Hegra, Saudi Arabia’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site. The opening marks a pivotal moment in AlUla’s transformation into a leading global heritage and cultural tourism destination.
By restoring and reimagining the historic Hegra railway station, the property delivers a refined hospitality experience deeply rooted in the region’s archaeological and cultural legacy.
A Hotel Set Within Living History
Hegra, situated in northwest Saudi Arabia, dates back to the 1st century BCE and was once a flourishing Nabataean city along the ancient Incense Road. The area later gained prominence with the construction of the historic railway line in the early 20th century, connecting Medina to Damascus.
The Chedi Hegra preserves elements of these railway structures, integrating them into a contemporary hotel concept while safeguarding the authenticity of the UNESCO-listed landscape. This careful restoration ensures that heritage remains central to the guest experience.
Architecture and Design That Honors the Past
The property’s design masterfully balances conservation and modern luxury. Original stone walls, mud-brick structures, and railway elements have been retained, while contemporary interiors introduce understated elegance and comfort.
A defining feature of the development is the expansive Shadow Canopy structure, which stretches across the site and links restored railway tracks with modern architectural elements. The result is a tranquil environment that invites exploration, reflection, and cultural immersion.
Boutique Accommodation in a Desert Setting
The Chedi Hegra features 35 meticulously restored rooms, suites, and villas. Each accommodation has been thoughtfully designed to respect the original structures while offering modern amenities.
Guests can enjoy private terraces, plunge pools, and panoramic views of dramatic sandstone formations and the ancient necropolis. The limited inventory reflects a commitment to sustainable tourism and low-impact development within the heritage zone.
Culinary Experiences Rooted in Place
Dining at The Chedi Hegra celebrates both local traditions and global influences. The main restaurant, housed within the restored railway station, serves Mediterranean-inspired cuisine crafted with locally sourced ingredients. A historic 1906 locomotive stands as a striking focal point, reinforcing the site’s railway legacy.
Additional venues include a refined lounge offering international fare and a traditional Saudi coffee house where guests can participate in interactive workshops highlighting regional coffee rituals and storytelling traditions.
Wellness and Leisure
Wellness is integral to the resort’s philosophy. A dedicated spa villa currently offers treatments inspired by AlUla’s natural ingredients, including dates and rosemary. A larger wellness centre is set to open soon within a restored mud-brick structure, featuring saunas, steam rooms, and relaxation spaces.
The property also includes an outdoor swimming pool and a fitness centre designed to harmonise with the surrounding desert environment.
Cultural and Nature Exploration
Beyond the hotel grounds, guests can access guided tours of the UNESCO-listed Hegra site and explore AlUla’s unique desert ecosystem. Conservation initiatives protect local wildlife such as the Arabian Oryx and Nubian Ibex, aligning with AlUla’s sustainable development vision.
Art installations and heritage galleries on-site further enhance the immersive cultural journey.
A Milestone for AlUla’s Tourism Vision
Managed by General Hotel Management Ltd., The Chedi Hegra represents the brand’s debut in Saudi Arabia. The project aligns with the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 objectives, positioning AlUla as a world-class destination that prioritises sustainable place-making and heritage preservation.
The opening underscores the Royal Commission for AlUla’s commitment to developing high-end tourism experiences that celebrate history while supporting long-term conservation.
